The red collared dove is a small pigeon 20.5–23 cm long and about 104 g. Males have a blue-grey head, soft red-brown body and a narrow black collar across the hindneck; females are much plainer pinkish-brown and can resemble small Eurasian collared doves. The neat collar, compact build and low, rolling coo help distinguish it from other Streptopelia doves (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is primarily a plains bird of tropical Asia, occupying dry scrub, farmland and broad cultivated valleys while generally avoiding rocky foothills. Birds feed on the ground in pairs or flocks, taking grass seeds and spilled grain, and may make seasonal movements as crops and water change. A light twig platform is placed in a tree or shrub. Both sexes incubate the usual two white eggs for about 12–14 days (Wikipedia, general species account).
