Habitat
Evergreen and montane forest, chiefly on trees and often near water
Range
Southern China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam
The brown pricklenape is a Southeast Asian mountain horned dragon whose name refers to the spiny crest along the nape. Its brown and olive tones, keeled scales and irregular markings provide camouflage against trunks and shaded forest vegetation. The species has accumulated numerous historical synonyms, reflecting earlier uncertainty over variation within this widespread complex; modern identification should therefore use locality and diagnostic scale characters as well as colour (Reptile Database; Wikipedia).
Its accepted range includes southern China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. Vietnamese field guides associate it with trees in evergreen forest, while regional observations commonly place these agamids in humid montane forest near water. It is primarily diurnal and arboreal, waiting on vegetation and taking insects and other small invertebrates. Detailed diet and breeding data remain sparse across the range, so broader captive-care claims are not used as wild life-history evidence (Wildlife At Risk field guide; general Acanthosaura ecology).
