Pelodiscus variegatus
Rare visitor: recorded only occasionally in this country
Range
Recorded from Vietnam; see species account for evidence limits
Spotted Softshell Turtle (Pelodiscus variegatus) is a reptile recorded for Vietnam in the project inventory. Its supporting occurrence note is “Expert range list”. The accepted scientific name is retained because regional taxonomy and species boundaries can change, while similar-looking taxa may require detailed morphology or genetic evidence for reliable separation. This profile therefore distinguishes the recorded identity and occurrence from broader biological context instead of inventing unsupported locality, size, diet or breeding details (project species data; Reptile Database taxonomy).
Pelodiscus softshell turtles have flattened, leathery shells, webbed feet and elongated snouts that allow breathing while mostly submerged. They bury in sand or mud and hunt fishes, crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic prey, leaving water to bask or nest. Closely related species require careful morphological or genetic identification. These are genus-level notes rather than Vietnamese field observations, so exact body size, habitat, diet and clutch figures are omitted (general Pelodiscus account; Reptile Database).
