Picus rabieri

The red-collared woodpecker (Picus rabieri) is a species of bird in the family Picidae. It is found in Cambodia, China, Laos, and Vietnam. Its natural habitat is temperate forests. It is threatened by habitat loss. Picus rabieri is the scientific name used by the project species list. The description here uses general species-wide information and does not imply that every trait has been documented separately in Vietnam. (Wikipedia, general species account).

Woodpeckers use stiff tail feathers and grasping feet for support on trunks and branches. Their strong bills probe, chip or hammer into wood and bark for invertebrate prey, and many also take fruit or other plant foods. They normally excavate a tree cavity for nesting. These are family-level traits; the species account above should guide identification and habitat expectations (general Picidae ecology).
