The blue-throated barbet is a stocky green barbet, about the size of a myna, 19 to 22cm long. The head and neck are distinctive, with a bright red forehead, a black stripe across the crown, a red rear crown and a blue throat, with red patches at the sides of the neck. Sexes look alike and share domestic duties, and the female lays three or four matte-white eggs (Wikipedia, general species account).
It inhabits lowland and montane forest at 200 to 2,000m, frequenting fruiting trees, and feeds on fruits and berries, especially figs. Being green, it blends into the canopy, so its loud, frequent calls, like 'took-a-rook' and 'pu-ku-ruk' repeated 90 to 105 times a minute, are often the only sign of its presence. It is a resident breeder in the lower Himalayas. The account opened does not name Bhutan.
