The black-crowned night heron is a medium-sized heron found across much of the world. Adults have a black crown and back, a white or grey body, red eyes and short yellow legs, with pale grey wings and white underparts. One to eight, mostly two to four, long slender white plumes extend from the back of the head. Immature birds are dull grey-brown with pale teardrop spots (Wikipedia, general species account).
It has a hunched resting posture, extending its neck when hunting, and is very noisy in nesting colonies, with calls written as 'quok' or 'woc'. For a short period during courtship the legs turn bright salmon-pink and the skin around the eyes blue. It eats a very wide range of animal prey as well as carrion and plant matter. Three to eight eggs are laid. The sources read do not describe it in Bhutan.
