The striated heron, also called the mangrove or little green heron, is a small heron, 35 to 48cm long with a wingspan of 52 to 60cm and a weight of 130 to 250g. Adults have a blue-grey back and wings, white underparts, a black cap, a dark line from the bill to below the eye and short yellow legs. Juveniles are browner above and heavily streaked below (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is generally a lowland bird of marshes, lakes and rivers, standing still at the water's edge to ambush small fish, frogs and aquatic insects. The account opened is largely about South American and Caribbean birds and notes that the Old World form was formerly considered a different species, so it gives nothing specific to Bhutan and the entry is flagged.
