The Asian openbill is a large stork found mainly in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It is greyish in the non-breeding season and white in the breeding season, with glossy black wings and tail. Adults have a gap between the arched upper and recurved lower bill, thought to help in handling snails, their main prey; young birds are born without it (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is resident but makes long-distance movements in response to weather and food availability. The species name is Latin for yawning.
