The short-finned pilot whale is one of the two species of cetaceans in the genus Globicephala, which it shares with the long-finned pilot whale. It belongs to the oceanic dolphin family (Delphinidae) and has a worldwide distribution with a global population of about 700,000 (Wikipedia, general species account).

Pilot whales live in tight social groups and are known for mass strandings, in which whole pods come ashore, sometimes in the hundreds. The cached account is limited, so this entry is restricted to identification and general range.
