Balaenoptera brydei
Rare visitor: recorded only occasionally in this country
Habitat
Warm temperate and tropical waters
Range
Worldwide in warm temperate and tropical seas
Bryde's whale is the larger form of the Bryde's whale complex, a group of rorquals whose number of species and classification remain unclear for lack of definitive information and research. The common Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera brydei, Olsen, 1913) occurs worldwide in warm temperate and tropical waters, while the smaller Eden's whale may be restricted to the Indo-Pacific (Wikipedia, general account of the Bryde's whale complex).
Bryde's whales are baleen whales with twin blowholes and two rows of baleen plates and no teeth. Records made before the group was split are often filed under the older name Balaenoptera edeni, so which species an individual sighting belongs to is not always settled.
