The rose-ringed parakeet is a medium-sized parrot, 37 to 43cm long including its tail, which makes up a large part of the length. Both sexes are distinctively green with a red beak and a blue tail. Asian birds weigh 104 to 143g, rarely to 174g. It is a noisy species with an unmistakable squawking call, herbivorous and non-migratory (Wikipedia, general species account).
In Asia it occurs in the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka from 6° to 35° N, in the foothills of the Himalaya, and from the Indus valley east to the Irrawaddy. It usually feeds on buds, nectar, fruit, nuts, berries, seeds, grains and insects, and wild flocks fly several miles to farmland and orchards, causing extensive damage. In India it feeds on cereal grains and, in winter, pigeon peas. The account opened does not name Bhutan.
