Mauremys nigricans
Rare visitor: recorded only occasionally in this country
Range
Recorded from Vietnam; see species account for evidence limits
Red-necked Pond Turtle (Mauremys nigricans) is a reptile recorded for Vietnam in the project inventory. Its supporting occurrence note is “Expert range list”. The accepted scientific name is retained because regional taxonomy and species boundaries can change, while similar-looking taxa may require detailed morphology or genetic evidence for reliable separation. This profile therefore distinguishes the recorded identity and occurrence from broader biological context instead of inventing unsupported locality, size, diet or breeding details (project species data; Reptile Database taxonomy).
Mauremys pond turtles are semi-aquatic turtles of ponds, streams, marshes and other slow-water habitats. They bask, forage in water and on banks, and eat varying mixtures of aquatic animals, carrion and vegetation. Shell form, head stripes and plastron pattern are important for identification, while hybridization complicates some records. These are genus-level notes rather than observations of this species in Vietnam, so exact size, habitat, diet and clutch data are omitted (general Mauremys account; Reptile Database).
