Pseudocalotes brevipes
Rare visitor: recorded only occasionally in this country
Range
Recorded from Vietnam; see species account for evidence limits
Pseudocalotes brevipes (Pseudocalotes brevipes) is an agamid or gecko recorded for Vietnam in the project inventory. The supporting occurrence note is “Expert range list”. Its use of the exact scientific name is important because Southeast Asian lizard taxonomy changes frequently and several close relatives were described only recently. Where a familiar English name is present it is retained; otherwise the scientific name avoids inventing an unsupported vernacular name (project species data; Reptile Database taxonomy).
Pseudocalotes are slender, diurnal forest agamids that use shrubs, saplings and lower tree strata. They hunt small invertebrates and rely on camouflage, but males of some species develop brighter display colours. Many taxa are known from restricted montane localities and are distinguished by scale counts and proportions. These are genus-level traits rather than unsupported species-specific breeding data (general Pseudocalotes ecology; Reptile Database).
