Acanthosaura prasina
Rare visitor: recorded only occasionally in this country
Range
Recorded from Vietnam; see species account for evidence limits
Acanthosaura prasina (Acanthosaura prasina) is an agamid or gecko recorded for Vietnam in the project inventory. The supporting occurrence note is “Expert range list”. Its use of the exact scientific name is important because Southeast Asian lizard taxonomy changes frequently and several close relatives were described only recently. Where a familiar English name is present it is retained; otherwise the scientific name avoids inventing an unsupported vernacular name (project species data; Reptile Database taxonomy).
Mountain horned dragons are diurnal, mainly arboreal agamids of humid forest. They commonly use low trunks, saplings and streamside vegetation, relying on cryptic colour and remaining still before ambushing insects and other small animal prey. Species differ in elevation, scale arrangement and crest development, so locality and diagnostic morphology are important. These are genus-level traits, not assumed species-specific breeding data (general Acanthosaura ecology; Reptile Database).
