Trachypithecus hatinhensis
Rare visitor: recorded only occasionally in this country
Habitat
Steep limestone cliffs and dense forest
Range
Central Vietnam (mainly Quang Binh) and southern Laos
The Hatinh langur is a highly threatened Old World monkey found in limestone forests in Vietnam, primarily in Quang Binh Province. It is a mainly black, arboreal, diurnal monkey, and habitat fragmentation and hunting contribute to its decline (Wikipedia, general species account).
It inhabits the steep limestone cliffs of central Vietnam and southern Laos, which has earned it the name 'Limestone Langur'. Despite its name it is not known from Ha Tinh Province. The local Van Kieu people call it 'Con Cung', roughly 'black, cliff-dwelling monkey with a long tail'. It mostly occupies dense forest, venturing into open areas to forage, and sleeps in caves and crevices in the cliffs, usually about 20 m up but sometimes 50 m, for many years unless disturbed.
