Acridotheres tristis
Rare visitor: recorded only occasionally in this country
Diet
Omnivorous
Habitat
Open woodland; adapts well to cities
Range
Native to Asia; introduced widely
The common myna, or Indian myna, is a starling native to Asia, an omnivorous bird of open woodland with a strong territorial instinct that has adapted extremely well to urban environments. Its range has expanded rapidly through introductions, and it has become a serious pest in places such as Australia (Wikipedia, general species account).
It was described from a specimen wrongly thought to be from the Philippines, and the type location was later corrected to Pondicherry in southern India. The species name is Latin for sad or gloomy.
