Myanmar and Thailand through Indochina and the Malay Peninsula to Sumatra and Borneo
Size
21.5–23.5cm
The banded broadbill is a heavy-bodied canopy bird 21.5–23.5 cm long with a large turquoise-blue bill. Its head and underparts are rich purplish-red, while the darker upperparts and wings carry prominent yellow markings. A black band crosses the breast and another dark stripe runs through the eye, creating the layered pattern behind its English name. Males and females are broadly alike, although females tend to be duller and show less sharply defined markings (BirdForum species account).
Its range extends from Myanmar and Thailand through Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, then south through the Malay Peninsula to Sumatra and Borneo. It inhabits evergreen forest and moist mixed deciduous forest, usually feeding in the middle and upper levels. Arthropods form much of the diet, supplemented by small vertebrates and fruit. The nest is a conspicuous, hanging structure suspended from a branch, often over water, a trail or another opening beneath the canopy (Wikipedia, general species account; ScientificLib species account).
