Diet
Ground insects and other small animals
Habitat
Forest; terrestrial
Range
Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal and Vietnam
The blue-naped pitta is a brightly coloured, stub-tailed bird, blue and green above with reddish-yellow underparts, and a bright blue nape and hindneck and a brown tail with a little green. The sexes are similar, but the female's hindcrown is reddish-brown, not blue, and her hindneck is green. It is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal and Vietnam (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is terrestrial, and its double-whistle call can be heard from the ground and from a tree at dawn and dusk. The nesting season is April to August, and both sexes share parental duties. The diet is ground insects and other small animals. SoIB 2023 rates it a Moderate conservation priority, a resident forest bird with a Restricted range of about 28,800 km² and insufficient data on trends (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
