The thick-thumbed myotis is a small mouse-eared bat weighing about 4.5–5.5 g, with a forearm of 2.9–3.1 cm. Thick pink pads at the bases of the thumbs and on the feet are its clearest external feature. It has light-grey fur, only slightly paler below, dark-grey ears and flight membranes, a pinkish muzzle and limbs, and an ear with a distinct notch along the outer margin (Kruskop 2013).

Vietnamese specimens examined for the identification manual came from Lam Dong and Dong Nai provinces. The species was encountered in lowland forest and used roads, trails and other forest gaps as flyways, with individuals caught from ground level to roughly six metres. It has also been observed flying close to the ground over narrow roads and small rivers. The wider documented range extends through Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia, but roosting and breeding information remains sparse (Kruskop 2013).
