The spotted owlet is a small, stocky owl barely 21cm long that breeds in tropical Asia from northern Pakistan to Southeast Asia. It is a common resident of open habitats including farmland and human habitation, and has adapted to living in cities. The upperparts are grey-brown heavily spotted with white, the underparts white streaked with brown, and the iris is yellow, with a white neckband (Wikipedia, general species account).
It nests in a hole in a tree or building, laying three to five white eggs. It roosts in small groups in tree hollows or cavities in rocks and buildings, and is nocturnal but often seen by day, when small birds mob it. The call is a harsh, loud churring and chuckling, given mainly around dawn and dusk. It hunts a variety of insects and small vertebrates. The sources read give nothing specific to Bhutan.
