The tawny fish owl is a large fish owl, 48 to 61cm long and one of the heaviest living owls. Six adults weighed an average of 2,415g, with a range of 2,050 to 2,650g. It has large, messy-looking ear tufts that usually hang to the sides of the head, yellow eyes, an orangey-rufous crown and upperparts with broad blackish markings, and a dingy yellow band across the shoulders (Wikipedia, general species account).
It lives in subtropical to temperate forest in southern Nepal, northern India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Laos, Myanmar, Taiwan and Vietnam. Like other fish owls it has a rough texture under its toes and large, powerful, curved talons with a sharp keel under the middle claw. Its territorial call is a deep 'whoo-hoo', and it has been seen hunting by day while feeding fledglings.
