Richard's pipit is a medium-sized pipit that breeds in open grasslands in the East Palearctic and is a long-distance migrant to open lowlands in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It is a large pipit, 17 to 20 cm long, 25 to 36 g, with a wingspan of 29 to 33 cm. It is slender and often stands very upright, with long yellow-brown legs, a long tail with white outer feathers and a long dark bill with a yellowish base (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is undistinguished on the ground, mainly brown above and pale below, with dark streaks on the upperparts and breast and a strongly marked face. It was once lumped with the Australasian, African, mountain and paddyfield pipits. It is named for the French naturalist Charles Richard.
