Phylloscopus trochiloides
Rare visitor: recorded only occasionally in this country
Habitat
Lowland deciduous or mixed forest when breeding
Range
Breeds in north-eastern Europe and temperate to subtropical Asia; winters in India
The greenish warbler is a typical leaf warbler, greyish-green above and off-white below. The single wing bar of southern and western populations separates it from most similar species except the Arctic warbler, which is slightly larger with a thicker bill that has a dark tip to the lower mandible. More northerly birds are smaller. Its song is a high, jerky trill, in some populations with a series of slurred notes (Wikipedia, general species account).
It breeds in lowland deciduous or mixed forest in north-eastern Europe and temperate to subtropical continental Asia, and is strongly migratory, wintering in India. It is a regular vagrant to western Europe, and a few pairs breed in Germany each year. It belongs to the leaf warbler family Phylloscopidae. SoIB 2023 lists it as mainly a winter migrant in India with a very large range, finds its current trend stable, and rates it a Low conservation priority (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
