Hemidactylus garnotii
Rare visitor: recorded only occasionally in this country
Range
Recorded from Vietnam; see species account for evidence limits
Garnot's House Gecko (Hemidactylus garnotii) is an agamid or gecko recorded for Vietnam in the project inventory. The supporting occurrence note is “Expert range list”. Its use of the exact scientific name is important because Southeast Asian lizard taxonomy changes frequently and several close relatives were described only recently. Where a familiar English name is present it is retained; otherwise the scientific name avoids inventing an unsupported vernacular name (project species data; Reptile Database taxonomy).
House geckos are nocturnal insectivores that climb with expanded adhesive toe pads. Depending on the species they occupy forest, rock and buildings, emerging after dark to hunt arthropods and often gathering near lights. Many lay paired hard-shelled eggs in protected crevices. These are genus-level traits and do not establish a precise Vietnamese breeding schedule for this taxon (general Hemidactylus ecology; Reptile Database).
