Pycnonotus flavescens
Rare visitor: recorded only occasionally in this country
Habitat
Moist montane forest
Range
Northeastern India and Bangladesh through Myanmar, southern China and Thailand to Indochina
The flavescent bulbul is a softly coloured montane bulbul with olive-green upperparts, yellowish underparts and a slightly crested head. The face is relatively plain, with a pale throat and subtle contrast around the eye, while the rounded tail contributes to one alternative name, round-tailed green bulbul. Three subspecies differ geographically, including vividus in northern Indochina and sordidus in southern Indochina (Wikipedia, general species account; IOC World Bird List).
Its range extends from northeastern India and Bangladesh through Myanmar, southern China and Thailand into Laos and Vietnam. The species is associated with moist montane forest rather than open lowlands. Birds usually occupy wooded slopes and forest edges, moving through shrubs and the middle storey in pairs or small parties. Vietnam spans the ranges of two recognised forms, making location relevant when interpreting plumage differences. The species remains resident within the broader Southeast Asian mountain system (Wikipedia, general species account).
