Pycnonotus xanthorrhous
Rare visitor: recorded only occasionally in this country
Diet
Fruit
Habitat
Subtropical and montane woodland, scrub and forest edge
Range
Central and southern China through northern Myanmar and Thailand to northern Indochina
The brown-breasted bulbul is a medium-sized Pycnonotus bulbul with a dark head, olive-brown upperparts, warm brown wash across the breast, paler belly and bright yellow undertail coverts. Its subdued breast colour and yellow vent can cause confusion with juvenile sooty-headed bulbuls, but the adult head pattern and lack of a contrasting red vent are useful. It is also known as Anderson's bulbul (Wikipedia, general species account).
It ranges from central and southern China through northern Myanmar and Thailand to northern Indochina, with the nominate subspecies reaching that region. The species occupies subtropical and montane woodland, scrub and forest edge, using fruiting shrubs and trees. Fruit forms a documented part of the diet, including Camellia japonica, and birds can move locally as crops ripen. Older literature sometimes calls it yellow-vented bulbul, a name now best avoided because it also belongs to the widespread Pycnonotus goiavier (Wikipedia, general species account).
