Elephas maximus
Rare visitor: recorded only occasionally in this country
Habitat
Forest, scrub and grassland, often near water
The Asian elephant, or Asiatic elephant, is the only living species in the genus Elephas. It is the largest living land animal in Asia and the second largest living elephantid in the world. It is characterised by its long trunk with a single finger-like process, large tusks in males, laterally folded large ears and wrinkled grey skin that is partly depigmented on the ears and trunk (Wikipedia, general species account).
It ranges across South and Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, where wild herds are now few and fragmented. Habitat loss and fragmentation are the main threats across the range, and conflict with people kills many elephants each year.
