The ruddy turnstone is a small, stocky wading bird, 22 to 24 cm long, and a highly migratory one. It breeds in northern parts of Eurasia and North America and flies south to winter on coastlines almost worldwide. It is the only turnstone in much of its range and is often called simply the turnstone. It is now placed in the sandpiper family, though once sometimes with the plovers (Wikipedia, general species account).

Two subspecies are recognised: the nominate form breeds from northeast Canada and Greenland across northern Europe to northeast Siberia and winters from Europe and Africa to Asia and Australasia, and morinella breeds in northeast Alaska and north Canada.
