Tropical South Asia and Southeast Asia
The Oriental darter is a water bird of tropical South Asia and Southeast Asia with a very long, slender neck and a straight pointed bill. It hunts fish with its body submerged, so only the neck shows above water, which earned it the name snakebird. It spears a fish underwater, brings it up, tosses and juggles it, and swallows it head first. Its feathers are wettable, so it perches with wings spread to dry (Wikipedia, general species account).
A kink in the neck at the 8th and 9th vertebrae and strong muscles let it dart the head forward to stab fish, and tiny serrations on the bill tips hold impaled fish. Adult plumage is black with silvery streaks on the wing coverts and a pale line over the eye and down the neck. The iris is white with a yellow ring.
