The Mekong white-bellied rat, Niviventer mekongis, was described from the Mekong River area of Laos. It was split from the South China white-bellied rat and is recorded from Vietnam, Laos and southern China. In Vietnam, a specimen has been photographed at Cuc Phuong National Park in Ninh Binh province (Mammal Diversity Database).
