The mainland serow is a goat-antelope of the Himalaya, Southeast Asia and China. Males and females are both around 91 cm at the shoulder and typically weigh around 91 kg. Only males have horns, light-coloured, about 150 mm long and curving slightly backward. The coat has bristly, coarse guard hairs covering the finer fur beneath to varying degrees. It is closely related to the red serow (Wikipedia, general species account).
It occurs in central and southern China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and the Indonesian island of Sumatra, as well as the Himalaya. It is territorial and lives alone or in small groups, with peaks of both daytime and night-time activity. A female gives birth to a single young after a gestation of about eight months.
