Rodents, birds, fruit, carrion and other plant matter
The golden jackal, or common jackal, is a wolf-like canid native to Eurasia. Its coat varies from pale creamy yellow in summer to dark tawny beige in winter, with a mix of black, brown and white hairs on the back and lighter underparts. It is smaller than the Arabian wolf, with shorter legs, a shorter tail, a more elongated torso, a less prominent forehead and a narrower, more pointed muzzle (Wikipedia, general species account).
Jackals eat rodents, birds and fruit, along with carrion and other plant matter. The species has a very wide range across south-eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central and South Asia and mainland Southeast Asia, with Vietnam near the eastern edge of its distribution.
