The black eagle is a large but slender eagle, about 75cm long with a wingspan of 148 to 182cm, though its weight is modest, at 1 to 1.6kg. It has all-black plumage with a yellow cere and feet, and is easily identified by its widely splayed, long primary fingers, its characteristic silhouette and its slow flight. The wing shape helps tell it from the dark form of the changeable hawk-eagle (Wikipedia, general species account).
It soars over forests in the hilly regions of tropical and subtropical South and Southeast Asia, hunting mammals and birds, particularly at their nests. It is seen on hot afternoons scouring the treetops for a nest to raid, often just above the canopy. It is generally resident, and no migration has been observed. The sources read give no Bhutan-specific records.
